History in detail: In April, 2001, Product Inspection opened an office in Wiesbaden, Germany to better serve the European market. In 2003 Heimann Systems GmbH, the parent company of Product Inspection, was purchased by the Smiths Group with all divisions of Heimann Systems GmbH, including Product Inspection, officially changing names to Smiths Heimann. The Smiths Group focuses on being the major supplier for all forms of security equipment including x-ray technology and explosives detection. In September 2005, the Smiths Heimann Product Inspection Division changed its name to Smiths Detection in an effort to better convey the mission of the company - detection. Today more than 35,000 Smiths Detection x-ray units are in operation in 150 countries. Smiths is a recognized leader in R&D with products ranging from an x-ray system to inspect semi-trucks for contraband to digital fingerprint capturing device for law enforcement applications. To date, Smiths Detection Product Inspection has sold more than 500 x-ray units worldwide for food inspection.
